There's been a discussion on the Personal Sovereignty network on the value of participation on Ryze networks. I have a definite view on that, built over six years of experience here.

First; You get back what you put in.
If you regularly read posts to Ryze networks, you learn a little but you never need to be really involved. This is how the chicken is involved in your breakfast. She couldn't care less really.

On the other hand if you have the interest and enthusiasm to POST regularly many things happen.
One, your level on interest rises.
Two, people get to know who you are.
Three, strangely YOU also get to know who you are, your posts become an interesting record of what drives you.
Four, you start hesitant and not knowing very much, but if you keep at it, your knowledge grows, your skill as a communicator develops and you begin to attract positive feedback.
Five, most of those who've stuck around for 4-5 years become network leaders themselves.

This is to be involved in breakfast as the pig is involved, you are personally in it, what you do matters, and how others respond matters. When people are critical or praiseworthy of YOU, it's surprising how much more interest you take. (Yes sometimes what they say isn't very fair, but you only need to be responsible for you, and you can't control what other people do. Let them grow by the choices they make, and you do the same. )

I've actually got three networks on Ryze now. You can see on this one that I've initiated most of the posts. Why pay US$100 a year to do that? Why indeed.

Let me explain. Every post I make is a deliberate ACT, something I decided to DO by CHOICE. You and I are the sum of all the choices we make, all the little decisions that we make every day. So I've started many topics here and the titles on those posts and the content of them are a statement about me. You need to decide for yourself what that statement is, but I think you'll be able to come to a conclusion quite quickly.

But: YOU don't need to spend a cent to participate here, you can have all the benefits I'm talking about on the networks other people provide. I recommend that you do that. When you've posted a 100 or so letters, when you've been here for 300 or 500 hours, and when you have developed your skills and confidence, perhaps then you'll choose as I have done to develop a network of your own. In the end the money is not important (Although I can recall a time when I couldn't afford to pay.)

We are entering a depression. Lots of people with good skills are going to have time on their hands and problems to solve. Networks like this one will be useful. This network has the power to change your life, but first of all YOU need to CHOOSE to use it.

This message is for all those people who never post.

It takes courage to post, to make a statement about who you are, and what you think. Start slowly. Your confidence will grow as you MAKE the EFFORT to say sensible things.

I want now to draw your attention to what Michael R Clayton did in this post, and how I handled what I thought was an abuse. I treated Michael's first post as a flyby-spam attack.
http://www.ryze.com/posttopic.php?topicid=1021232&confid=3530#3337813w.ryze.com/posttopic.php?topicid=1021232&confid=3530#3337813

Note also Michael's response. This shows that he's got some substance, and that he's not an online beginner. It's seldom today to see people unfairly attacked online, (Flaming was an everyday affair 15 years ago.) but if you post, you do open yourself to possible critical comment. How you respond to that is important. Your response tells much about who you really are. Michael's response was reasoned and moderate, and if he was offended by anything I said, that was set aside.

These are SKILLS you all need to learn.

First the skill to build your own independent viewpoint.
Second the skill to make a clear statement and the confidence to post it.
Third the skill to defend what you wrote with dignity.
Fourth the ability to absorb criticism, and find the value in it.

These are leadership skills.
Australia and New Zealand needs more leaders with good ideas and the confidence to pursue them.

Ryze and other online networks are places to develop those skills.
I also recommend Toastmasters as a leadership training organisation of great quality.
YOU become what you DO.
So you are a reader.
Are you a thinker?
Are you a writer?
Are you a communicator?
Are you becoming a leader?

What are you DOING that is making a difference?
