Sadly I agree.

The problem with the United Nations, is that the major powers want the UN to be as weak as possible. A weak UN makes it easier for them to get their own way when push comes to shove.

At various times different powers have utilised the veto cripple the UN, and to prevent effective action. The USSR was once the main country exercising the veto but in recent years the USA has been the "problem" and more recently China has been "difficult".

I've written before on Ryze about this issue. On Sunday morning I heard Hugh Templeton speak about a professional NZ Diplomat in the 1950's, Carl Berendsen, who away back then identified the veto as the stumbling block preventing the United Nations from being part of a successful solution to world problems.

Apparently, it's been official NZ policy for a long time that the veto should go.
