Hello Everyone

This is my attempt to FIX, a problem with messaging on Ryze. It costs you nothing, will keep you better informed and save you LOTS of time.

On this network Social Networking Newbies, I ask you to take 5 minutes to also enroll to the same group that I've created at Online Groups. Online Groups is a little known but very good email service specializing in list-serv mail.

There's a web interface that is easier to read than Ryze. You can attach documents to posts, and include pictures, but better still when you get the mail about the post you get the whole text, you don't then need to go to the web site to reply, just write a reply in your email programme, like any reply you would write.

The discussion group is called snnforum

For Mentors, there is a discussion group about how to best help those who request mentoring. That group is called snnmentors but it's a invitation only group. Once you are a member of Online Groups, it's a simple find and click process for me to invite you to that group.

I'll talk in more detail about how each mentor can have his or her own private group, how you can choose who is or is not a member. Since you have control of who's a member you can also choose to charge a fee if you wish. I expect mentors will use an RSS Reader to keep track of the posts.

Using Online Groups gives you one more profile to fill in, but this one is easy, it's not an advertisement, just the simple facts, plus the URL of your Ryze homepage, where if anyone wants more detail they can get it.

You join Social Networking Newbies at Online Groups here.

John, the OnlineGroups site is a PITA.
It does not remember my password and I really don't want to get the full copy of each post in my email.

I also don't especially need or want to belong to YET another SN. Why don't we have the articles in Ryze instead?

Hello Reg

I've been using Online Groups for 2 years. There are some minor problems, but I've never heard of not remembering your password as one of them. I have never had a problem like that. Check the Remember me box before you sign in.

And as for the email. That's a choice, if you don't want the mail, turn it OFF.

At Online Groups Open your Profile.

On the left choose email settings.

At the top of the page are alternative email addresses.
Down the page are your mail delivery options.

"Message Notification [?]

How do you wish to be informed of posts to Social Networking Newbies Mentors?
One email message per post.
Daily digest of topics.
Email delivery disabled: no email sent to you from this group."

Make your choice. Mine is now OFF because I'm getting the RSS Feed.

I still don't see why articles that are intended for Ryze members should be posted in another SN group.

I did check the remember me box. I made an account and even posted once.

I do not find it is a user friendly system. No post preview, for example.

Dear Reg

People will do what people will do. I have NO power over your behaviour. People will join Online Groups or they will not. That's not in my hands either. If they do, there are significant advantages that overcome some of the basic limitations of Ryze.

I'm asking for help and support here. We'll see what happens.

I have suggested a work around that will improve message sending. It's an experiment in this one network. It is a work around, it's not the seamless system I'd like to see, but it can work. (Of course and effort to make sure it doesn't work would be less than useful right now.)

Here are the ADVANTAGES of using Online Groups.

1. Direct full text email of each post. Or the option of a daily digest. (Or the option of turning the mail off.)

2. RSS Feeds for the small number of people who use them. (But for all those who begin to use RSS, it's much quicker again than any email system, and allows you to develop your own chosen news sources from blogs and newspapers and lists. )

3. If you take the email direct, you can reply in your email client. Just hit reply, write your answer and send. (Once again saving you time.)

4. Online Groups offers a search engine for back posts that's far superior to the Ryze one. (Still slow, but it does find the right stuff.)

5. Online Groups provides a chat facility you can use for mentoring or training.

6. Online groups allows the creation of as many large or small groups as required within a sub-domain. So in the Social Networking Newbies sub-domain I can create a new private group for each and every person who wants to be a mentor.

7. If you are mentoring a group, that saves YOU time. It doesn't stop you mentoring privately, it's just another tool you can use.

8. You can attach pictures, document files and html files to posts. So if you are wanting to refer people to an HTML source, you have the option of giving the link, or of attaching the html as a file.

***********
You can't post HTML directly into Online Groups as you can on Ryze.

And as Reg says you can't have a pre-view of your post as on Ryze.

You win some you lose some. Online groups as it is currently cobbled to SNN is not quite the solution I would like, but it is a step forward.

Hi John.

I have to agree somewhat with Reg on this one. Tips for
Ryze newbies should be here, at Ryze. I also realize that
this group is about Social Networking in general and not
just Ryze.

There are good and bad points to all social networking
places. We do all know that too, as none of us have
blinders on when it comes to showing our faces and jumping
into new arenas.

The differences between Ryze and Online Groups should not
be a debate however, all points are well taken. :)
