I just recently read a very interesting article on a FastCompany site about Twitter. Although the article speaks about Twitter specifically, I do believe what it says about Twitter can be said about Social Media networking in general.

According to the article, success on Twitter is NOT about how many people follow you. Instead, it's about who those following you are and their relationship to you. Obviously, it's possible to have followers on Twitter and no real relathionship whatsoever other than the fact a certain person may be in your audience. But, just being an audience member means very little if there is not some kind of relationship building or nurturing going on.

Now, I have been saying this sort of thing for years. But, I never dreamed a university study into Social Media would come forward and confirm it. But, that is exactly what has happened. See for yourself - click here.

While Twitter is known for placing limitations on your number of followers for fear of spamming an audience, Foursquare takes a somewhat different approach. It empowers individual members to impose those limitations. For that reason, I encourage membership in Foursquare.com. I also encourage members to add me any my long list of friends to your Foursquare list of friends. Why should you even bother? Because I designed my Foursquare list to have influential people scattered with it. If you add me and my friends to your Foursquare list - and they choose to connect with you - you will have infludential folks within your Foursquare audience.

What happening here is a "community of friends" is helping to nurture its own growth. Why not choose to be a part of it?
